The Global Positioning System is one of man’s greatest discoveries and it is a very huge step in the development of technology. GPS practically means the positioning of any device or gadget that has got a GPS receiver, with respect to the four dimensions namely latitude, longitude, altitude and time. The Global Positioning System works with the help of three satellites that are orbiting the earth and so they could cover every nook and corner of our planet and locate the device or gadget’s location. These three GPS satellites are kept equidistant from each other for this purpose. But a normal person cannot use the GPS system as such and sort out his location from the latitude and longitude details got from the GPS system. For our easy understanding, GPS receivers are provided with mapping systems that could easily locate the place of the receiver along with the details of any nearest landmark from the receiver’s location. GPS receivers in cars can help us get to our desired place in the shortest possible route without straining ourselves to study routes. Presently, mobile phones are provided with GPS receivers so that it would be of very good use in case of any emergency or trouble with the routes. Valuable vehicles and locomotives are provided with in-built GPS receivers and unique identification serials so that we can easily find the vehicle's location in case of theft.
